In this painting, I explore the mythological belief that trees are intimately connected to the heavens, acting as natural antennae for divine energies. This deep spiritual reverence is beautifully reflected in the global tradition of making offerings to trees to have a wish granted or a prayer heard. Whether it is a string tied to a branch, a colourful ribbon fluttering in the wind, a written prayer on a piece of paper, or a coin carefully hammered into the trunk, these acts of faith connect us across continents. The Tanabata festival in Japan, the Kalpavriksha in India, the Dilek Ağacı in Turkey, clootie wells in Scotland, coin trees in the UK, and the iconic Lam Tsuen wishing trees right here in Hong Kong all serve as profound visual reminders that we still hold firmly to our ancient, shared beliefs.
